Iran secures World Cup berth with 3‑0 victory over DPR Korea
Team Melli finishes atop Group A and books place in 2026 FIFA World Cup under new 48‑team format
TEHRAN, Iran (MNTV) — Iran capped its Asian qualifying campaign with a commanding 3‑0 win over winless DPR Korea at Tehran’s Azadi Stadium, sealing a first-place finish in Group A with 23 points—two clear of Uzbekistan—and confirming its spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The match took a decisive turn in the 66th minute when DPR Korea’s midfielder Kye Tam was sent off for a second yellow card.
Iran capitalized shortly after: Mohammadmehdi Mohebi opened the scoring in the 73rd minute, Mehdi Taremi doubled the lead in the 77th, and Amirhossein Hosseinzadeh struck during stoppage time to cement the victory.
“This win caps a strong campaign with Iran topping the group,” Iranian Football Federation officials noted, according to Tehran Times.
The result keeps Team Melli on track following their earlier 2‑2 draw with Uzbekistan in March, which had already secured their qualification.
Under the expanded 48-team format for the 2026 World Cup, Asia is allocated eight direct qualifying spots. Iran joins already-qualified Asian heavyweights Australia, Japan, South Korea, and debutants Uzbekistan—each securing their berths after strong performances in recent matches.
Iran’s campaign reflects both consistency and tactical discipline under head coach Carlos Queiroz.
The team’s dominance in Group A was palpable, outmatching DPR Korea despite spending 24 minutes a man down after the red card.
Looking ahead, Iran will travel to North America next summer to compete in the tournament set to unfold across Canada, Mexico, and the United States from June 11 to July 19, 2026.
