Iran secures first win over India at Women’s Youth Handball
Team eyes knockout stage after strong performance in final Group B match
JINGGANGSHAN, China (MNTV) — Iran’s national youth handball team claimed its first win at the 2025 Asian Women’s Youth Handball Championship on Monday, defeating India 42–30 in their final Group B preliminary match.
The victory came after consecutive losses to regional powerhouses Japan and South Korea earlier in the tournament.
With this result, Iran now advances to the knockout stage, where they will take on the fourth-place team from Group A in Wednesday’s quarterfinal round.
This year marks the 11th edition of the championship, held from July 18 to 26 in Jinggangshan under the supervision of the Asian Handball Federation.
It is also the first time the competition has been hosted by the Chinese Handball Association. The tournament serves as a qualifier for the 2026 Women’s Youth World Handball Championship.
Group A of the tournament includes China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, and Kazakhstan. The preliminary stage concluded on July 21, with the semi-finals set for July 23 and the final scheduled for July 26.
Historically, South Korea has dominated the tournament, winning eight out of the ten editions between 2005 and 2019. Iran claimed the 2022 title in the absence of both Japan and Korea, while Japan took the crown in 2023.
