G7 backs Israel, blames Iran for Middle East unrest
Group of Seven urges regional de-escalation, affirms Israel’s right to self-defense, and reasserts stance ‘against a nuclear-armed Iran’
WASHINGTON (MNTV)— Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations have issued a strong statement of support for Israel, while placing responsibility for regional instability squarely on Iran, amid an escalating military conflict between the two rivals that has already claimed hundreds of civilian lives.
In a statement released late Monday, G7 leaders declared: “We affirm that Israel has a right to defend itself. We reiterate our support for the security of Israel. Iran is the principal source of regional instability and terror.”
Israel launched an attack on Iran on 13th June targeting its key air bases, and assassinating several top ranked military commanders. Tel Aviv described it as a preemptive move to halt Iran’s alleged nuclear weapons development program.
Iran responded with a series of retaliatory attacks, fueling fears of a broader regional war.
According to official sources, over 220 people have been killed in Iran, most of them civilians, while 24 Israeli civilians have also lost their lives in the Iranian response.
The G7 emphasized a united front against Iranian nuclear ambitions, stating: “Iran can never have a nuclear weapon.”
Iran, a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), maintains that its nuclear program is intended solely for peaceful purposes. Israel, widely believed to possess nuclear weapons, is not a party to the treaty. It neither confirms nor denies its nuclear capability.
The G7 statement failed to mention the Israeli nuclear program.
The joint statement also included a broader call for de-escalation across the region, including an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, where Israel has waged a war since October 2023.
President Donald Trump, attending the G7 summit in Canada, left early to return to Washington. While the United States has stated it was not directly involved in the Israeli strikes, Trump confirmed on Friday that Washington was informed in advance, calling the strikes “excellent.”
An Israeli strike on Monday reportedly hit Iran’s state broadcasting facility, and in a social media post, President Trump said: “Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran.”
