EU vows enduring support for Bosnia’s European dream
On a visit to Sarajevo, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas highlights bloc’s unwavering commitment to Bosnia’s security and European future
SARAJEVO, Bosnia & Herzegovina (MNTV) – The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, reaffirmed the EU’s strong and enduring commitment to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s European aspirations during a high-profile visit to Camp Butmir in Sarajevo.
Kallas, who is also Vice-President of the European Commission, was warmly received by Major General Florin Marian Barbu, Commander of EUFOR (European Union Force), and Luigi Soreca, Head of the EU Delegation and EU Special Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Addressing troops stationed at the EUFOR base, Kallas emphasised the EU’s deep-rooted support for Bosnia, both in terms of its stability and its long-term goal of European Union membership.
“We deeply care about this country and its European future,” she declared, sending a strong message of solidarity to Bosnian citizens and leadership alike.
The ceremony was attended by several senior military officials, including Lieutenant General Rodolfo Sganga, Chief of Staff at NATO’s Joint Force Command Naples and Head of the European Union Coordination Element, and Brigadier General Matthew A. Valas, Commander of NATO Headquarters Sarajevo.
In her remarks, Kallas praised the dedication and professionalism of EUFOR and NATO personnel working together to maintain peace and security in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
She stressed the importance of continued international military presence to support the country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political stability amid ongoing challenges.
Highlighting the European Union’s role, Kallas reassured that the EU would remain Bosnia’s most stable, reliable, and predictable partner.
She reiterated that the bloc stands firmly behind Bosnia’s reforms on its path toward full EU membership and supports its efforts to build a democratic, inclusive, and prosperous society.
EUFOR’s presence under Operation Althea plays a vital role in safeguarding the safe and secure environment mandated under the Dayton Peace Agreement.
With political tensions occasionally flaring in the region, Kallas’s visit and her words of reassurance were seen as a significant gesture underlining the EU’s long-term commitment to peace and integration in the Western Balkans.
The visit comes at a crucial time, as Bosnia and Herzegovina works to meet the necessary reforms for further advancement on its EU accession journey, following the European Council’s decision to open accession negotiations.
