EU condemns Israeli strike on UN peacekeepers in Lebanon
EU stressed that the safety of UN personnel must be guaranteed under international law and UN Security Council Resolution 1701
BRUSSELS, Belgium (MNTV) – The European Union on Monday condemned Israel’s Oct. 26 attack on UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon, calling it the latest in a string of similar incidents and urging all parties to respect the ceasefire.
In a statement, the EU stressed that the safety of UN personnel must be guaranteed under international law and UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
It also reiterated its demand for Israel to withdraw from “the entire Lebanese territory.”
The bloc urged full compliance with the Nov. 26, 2024 ceasefire agreement, which required Israel to pull its troops out of southern Lebanon by January 2025.
However, Israel continues to maintain a military presence at five border outposts.
UNIFIL, the UN Interim Force in Lebanon, has operated in the region since 1978 and was expanded after the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war.
Despite the truce, Israel has continued launching airstrikes in Lebanon, claiming to target Hezbollah positions.
