Egypt urges Africa’s role in global reforms
Cairo forum highlights push for African leadership in global governance, economic reform, and multilateral decision-making
CAIRO, Egypt (MNTV) — Egypt has called on African states to move from the margins to the center of global decision-making, emphasizing the continent’s growing political and economic weight during the second ministerial conference of the Russia–Africa Partnership Forum.
The conference, held in Cairo on December 19 and 20, brought together more than 50 African delegations to align cooperation frameworks with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and to advance the objectives of the Russia–Africa partnership.
Opening the forum, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said Africa’s demographic scale and economic potential require a stronger and more structured presence in an increasingly multipolar international system.
He described the partnership with Russia as a practical mechanism for implementing the 2023–2026 cooperation roadmap and for preparing a new action plan covering 2026–2029.
Abdelatty placed particular emphasis on reforming international institutions, calling for changes to the United Nations Security Council in line with the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration so that global governance structures better reflect contemporary geopolitical realities.
He also urged reform of the international financial system, arguing for a framework based on equity and balance that addresses the needs of developing countries.
On economic cooperation, the minister said partnerships should reinforce Africa’s internal development.
He identified the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a key driver of regional integration and reiterated Egypt’s commitment, as chair of the NEPAD Steering Committee, to mobilizing investment for large-scale, cross-border infrastructure projects.
Abdelatty also expressed concern over rising international tensions and the spread of terrorism in several parts of Africa, stressing the importance of political solutions and rejecting external interference in the continent’s internal affairs.
Addressing regional developments, the foreign minister reaffirmed Egypt’s role in efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza.
He reiterated Cairo’s support for a two-state solution, underscoring the need for the immediate flow of humanitarian assistance and the rapid reconstruction of the Gaza Strip.
