British MP’s newborn daughter targeted with racist online abuse
British MP Adnan Hussain revealed that his newborn daughter was subjected to a torrent of racist, Islamophobic, and sexist abuse
LONDON, United Kingdom (MNTV) — British MP Adnan Hussain revealed that his newborn daughter was subjected to a torrent of racist, Islamophobic, and sexist abuse on social media just hours after her birth.
Hussain, who represents Blackburn as an Independent Alliance member, said his X account was flooded with “vile” remarks after he posted a pixelated image of his daughter.
“The atmosphere around us is darkening, both online and offline,” he warned, calling the attacks “a very dark abyss of hatred.”
The MP, of Pakistani descent and a first-time father, said the abuse included demands that he and his family be “sent back to their ancestral homeland.”
He described many of the comments as “absolutely racist” and said they came as “no great shock” given the rising tide of hate speech in Britain.
While Hussain noted that responses on Facebook were largely supportive, including goodwill from people with differing political views, he contrasted this with what he called a toxic environment on X.
He urged tech companies to do more to moderate content and criticized platforms for allowing such hostility to go unchecked.
Hussain left the Labour Party following Keir Starmer’s leadership victory in 2020 and has since campaigned for minority representation and against online hatred.
He stressed that unchecked racism has “very real, very dangerous, real-world consequences” and demanded stronger action from both political leaders and civil society.
His experience comes as MPs across the political spectrum report escalating abuse.
Conservative MP Ben Obese-Jecty said in July he was “inundated with racist comments” after a debate on governance reforms, while Labour’s Satvir Kaur described the misogynistic hate she faced as “extreme” and “almost daily.”
Hussain warned that determined forces are trying to drag society “down a very dark abyss of hatred” but insisted that an equally strong pushback was essential: “A force just as strong, just as determined, should hit back, and say enough, we will not allow this.”
