The membership certificate was presented at a ceremony in the mayor’s office, marking international recognition of Ashgabat’s efforts to promote lifelong learning and expand educational opportunities for residents of all ages.
Eleven capitals joined the network in 2025, including Cairo, Ankara, Lisbon, Riyadh, Hanoi and Buenos Aires.
UNESCO said the network now includes 425 cities from 91 countries, reaching nearly half a billion people. Twelve countries, including Turkmenistan, joined the initiative for the first time this year.
Established in 2013, the Global Network of Learning Cities promotes comprehensive learning ecosystems spanning schools, workplaces, libraries, museums and public spaces.
Member cities work to enhance literacy, support entrepreneurship, adapt to rapidly changing labor markets and develop skills needed for the digital economy.
