Algeria retaining great potentials for lithium battery production
Renowned researcher Karim Zaghib outlines strategic vision for lithium industry
ALGIERS, Algeria (MNTV) – Algeria holds significant potential to emerge as a key player in the global lithium battery industry, thanks to its rich mineral resources and skilled workforce, according to prominent scientific researcher Prof. Karim Zaghib.
Speaking in Algiers following a meeting with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Prof. Zaghib emphasized the country’s capacity to build a robust industrial base for the local production of lithium batteries.
He presented a comprehensive vision for utilizing Algeria’s abundant lithium, iron, and phosphate reserves to support battery manufacturing, particularly for electric vehicles and energy storage solutions.
“Algeria possesses all the elements needed to become a major hub in the lithium battery supply chain,” Zaghib stated, underlining the global demand for safe and efficient energy storage solutions.
Efforts are currently underway in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Renewable Energies and the Sonarem group to launch production of phosphoric acid as an initial step, before moving toward full-scale battery manufacturing.
The development of this industry, according to Zaghib, could generate over 50,000 direct jobs and 100,000 indirect jobs, providing a significant boost to the national economy.
He also pointed to Algeria’s strong foundation of talented and well-trained youth as a critical asset in driving this transformation.
President Tebboune expressed full support for the initiative and affirmed his commitment to advancing the lithium industry as a strategic national priority.
