Algeria probes record wildfires hitting northern provinces
Authorities investigate simultaneous blazes that forced evacuations and destroyed forests across multiple regions in unusual late‑autumn surge
ALGIERS, Algeria (MNTV) — Algerian President Abdelmajid Tebboune has ordered an immediate investigation into an unprecedented wave of wildfires that erupted across the country in recent days, causing widespread damage and displacing dozens of families.
Authorities reported 55 simultaneous fires—a rare occurrence for November—primarily affecting forests and scrublands across roughly ten northern provinces.
State media noted that four suspects have been arrested in connection with the blazes, while officials seek to determine whether the fires were accidental or deliberate.
The Civil Protection agency confirmed that most of the fires have now been extinguished. Firefighters faced extreme conditions, including violent winds exceeding 60 km/h, particularly in Tipaza near Algiers, where nearly 300 personnel and two 12,000‑liter water bomber aircraft were deployed to contain the flames.
Officials emphasized that the inquiry will examine the unusual timing and scope of the fires, assessing both natural causes and potential human involvement.
The incident has raised concerns about wildfire preparedness and the resilience of local emergency response systems.
