Algeria consolidates defense with purchase of 12 Russian Su-57 stealth jets
Deal positions North African nation among world’s few fifth-generation fighter operators
ALGIERS, Algeria (MNTV) — Algeria has reportedly finalized an agreement with Russia to purchase 12 Su-57 fifth-generation stealth fighter jets, marking one of the most significant advancements in its ongoing military modernization program.
According to leaked internal documents from Russia’s state defense conglomerate Rostec, the deal also includes the acquisition of Su-34 fighter-bombers and advanced avionics packages supplied through the KRET electronic warfare division.
The documents list Algeria under the defense client code “012,” with component deliveries planned between 2024 and 2026 and full operational deployment expected within two years.
The Su-57 acquisition elevates Algeria’s Air Force into an elite circle of nations operating stealth combat aircraft.
The move signals the country’s intent to strengthen deterrence capabilities and maintain a technological edge in the Mediterranean and Sahel regions, where security dynamics have shifted amid renewed geopolitical rivalries.
Analysts note that Algeria’s defense buildup, focused on next-generation airpower, advanced radar systems, and long-range strike capability, aligns with its broader strategy of reducing reliance on Western defense suppliers while deepening military ties with Moscow.
The deal’s details emerged through a leak of Rostec correspondence, PowerPoint presentations, and internal procurement plans.
While the documents have not yet been officially verified, they correspond with previous reports suggesting that Algiers has long sought to procure fifth-generation fighters from Russia.
Delivery of the aircraft is expected to unfold gradually, with assembly and testing phases projected for completion by late 2026.
The introduction of the Su-57 fleet will likely replace or complement Algeria’s existing Su-30MKA and Su-35 squadrons, providing enhanced stealth, electronic warfare, and multi-role precision strike capabilities.
