Algeria condemns France over ‘misleading’ TV documentary
Foreign ministry protests France 2 report, warns of consequences amid deepening diplomatic tensions
ALGIERS, Algeria (MNTV) — Algeria’s Foreign Ministry accused France of promoting hostility after a documentary aired on French public television, calling the report “full of lies and fabrications” and warning of potential retaliatory measures.
The ministry said it summoned the charge d’affaires of the French Embassy in Algiers to protest the France 2 report titled “Rumors and Dirty Tricks: The Secret War Between France and Algeria,” which alleged covert Algerian campaigns of intimidation, influence and disinformation in France.
In its statement, Algeria said the programme was “abusive” and described it as a compilation of “counter-truths” that were deeply offensive and provocative, while accusing the French embassy of acting with apparent approval from French official circles.
Algeria warned that the documentary represents an escalation in anti-Algerian actions and said it reserves the right to take follow-up measures, stressing the “extreme gravity” of the situation.
The latest diplomatic dispute comes amid already tense relations between the two countries, rooted in colonial history and worsened by disagreements over migration policy and France’s support for Morocco on the Western Sahara issue.
Algeria recently adopted a law criminalizing French colonial crimes, demanding an apology and reparations from Paris for atrocities during its 132-year rule, further straining ties between the nations.
