Abu Dhabi pioneers AI-powered MRI tool to accelerate multiple sclerosis diagnosis
Collaboration between NYUAD, Yas Clinic, and ADSCC introduces advanced brain imaging technologies to UAE healthcare
ABU DHABI, UAE (MNTV) — Abu Dhabi has launched a groundbreaking artificial intelligence-powered MRI technique designed to speed up and improve the accuracy of multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis, marking a major advancement in the country’s healthcare innovation.
The initiative is the result of a two-year collaboration between New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), Yas Clinic–Khalifa City, and the Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Centre (ADSCC), which worked to translate MRI research into clinical practice.
According to Zawya, the partnership has focused on evaluating new treatments and refining imaging technologies for better patient outcomes.
Central to this effort is the FLAIRstar module, an AI-driven computational tool that analyzes MRI scans to detect the “central vein sign” (CVS), a highly specific biomarker for MS.
By distinguishing genuine MS lesions from those caused by migraines or vascular disease, the tool helps neurologists deliver faster and more accurate diagnoses.
The collaboration has also advanced the LAMINATE project, which applies refined MRI techniques developed at NYUAD to clinical care at Yas Clinic.
The system tracks brain changes over time, supporting trials of new therapies such as Extracorporeal Photopheresis (ECP), with all data securely managed within the UAE.
“Through our collaboration with NYUAD, we are combining clinical expertise with state-of-the-art MRI methods to bring transformative solutions for MS care,” said Dr. Lev Brylev, Consultant Neurologist at Yas Clinic. “Tools like FLAIRstar and LAMINATE are already improving diagnosis, accelerating treatment, and ultimately enhancing patient outcomes.”
Prof. Osama Abdullah, MRI Physicist at NYUAD’s Centre for Brain and Health, added, “This is a perfect example of the bench-to-bedside journey. Partnering with Yas Clinic and ADSCC allows us to validate and apply these discoveries in a real-world setting, creating a powerful ecosystem for healthcare innovation right here in Abu Dhabi.”
The project reflects the UAE’s growing role as a hub for advanced medical research and technology, combining local expertise with global innovation to tackle complex neurological conditions and strengthen clinical excellence.
