RAMALLAH, Palestine (MNTV) - Palestine on Friday welcomed South African jurist Navi Pillay being awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, saying the honor recognizes her efforts to defend international law and document Israeli crimes.

The Foreign Ministry said Pillay’s win represented an elevation of “the voice of truth and the voice of the oppressed,” and recognized her efforts to advance peace and international law.

It said Pillay devoted her career to upholding law and justice and defending the rights of oppressed people in South Africa and around the world, including Palestinians.

The ministry praised her leadership of the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel, which she chaired from 2021 to 2025.

It said the commission helped document genocide, sexual violence, attacks on children and other Israeli violations.

The ministry said the prize was also recognition for defenders of international law and justice and encouragement for efforts to hold perpetrators of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity accountable.

It added that Pillay has consistently defended the universality of law and equality among people, including Palestinians, and said the award underscored that “there can be no lasting peace without justice and equality for all.”

The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced that it awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to the 85-year-old jurist “for her efforts to promote peace and international law.”

“This year's laureate has significantly enlarged the scope and impact of international law,” it said, highlighting her work in international courts and as UN high commissioner for human rights.

Pillay, born into a family of Indian Tamil origin in Durban, South Africa, under apartheid, began her legal career challenging racial discrimination and defending opponents of the apartheid system.

She served as UN high commissioner for human rights, as a judge at the International Criminal Court and as president of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. She has also served as an ad hoc judge at the International Court of Justice.

The UN commission she chaired concluded in a 2025 report that Israel had committed genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, a finding rejected by Israel.

The Nobel Peace Prize will be presented in Oslo on Dec. 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.

WASHINGTON, United States (MNTV) - President Donald Trump said Friday that Washington may take action against Iran, while asserting that Tehran is "failing badly."

Asked why a US response might be tied to the Nov. 3 midterm elections – about three weeks away – rather than being carried out now, Trump said: "We may.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (MNTV) - Passenger and air traffic at King Khalid International Airport in the Saudi capital returned to normal Friday after two attacks by Yemen’s Houthis killed three Saudi citizens and injured others, Saudi state media reported.

State-run Alekhbariya TV said passenger movement at the airport is “flowing smoothly,” with operational services resumed and air traffic back to normal.

The broadcaster said the rapid restoration of flights reflected the readiness of the airport’s infrastructure and the flexibility of Saudi Arabia’s civil aviation system in dealing with exceptional circumstances and containing their effect, while prioritizing the safety of passengers and staff.

It noted that the attack on the airport was not the first this week, with the country facing Houthi attacks targeting civilian airports since Tuesday.

Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation said Friday that three citizens were killed and others injured in two attacks Thursday that targeted facilities at the airport and a Saudi Arabian Airlines aircraft.

It said one attack targeted airport facilities, while the second struck a Saudi Airlines aircraft.

The attacks injured a number of citizens and residents of different nationalities, it said.

The injuries ranged from minor to serious, and the wounded were taken to hospitals for treatment.

It also reported property damage from the attacks, without specifying the extent.

The agency did not identify the party responsible for the attacks, but the Houthis said Thursday that they had launched ballistic and cruise missile attacks targeting King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Najran Airport in the south and an air base in Khamis Mushait in the southwest.

October 9, 2026, Toronto, Ontario – Statistics Canada announced today that the economy lost 68,000 jobs in September, up from 42,000 in August. Economists had initially expected a gain of 9,200 jobs.

According to StatCan, job losses were nearly evenly split between full-time and part-time positions and were mostly in the public sector. This decline pushed the unemployment rate up a tenth of a percentage point to 6.5%, returning to the January level. September now marks the steepest single-month job losses since February.

Robert Kavcic, senior economist at BMO Capital Markets, stated, "There's no way to sugarcoat it. It's a very bad jobs report for September, following a disappointing report in August."

He noted, however, that some positive news emerged: employers had expanded their payrolls substantially earlier in the year, adding about 181,000 jobs from April to July. Additionally, employment is up 95,000 positions from last September.

Kavcic said that smoothing out the often-volatile job figures over the past six months shows modest but steady gains. He acknowledged that while "it's not a good sign going into the fourth quarter (with bad numbers), if you step back and ignore some of the month-to-month noise, it does look like the job market is holding up relatively well."

Despite four consecutive months of declines in public sector employment, private-sector stability reassured economists.

The educational services sector saw the biggest decline, losing 35,000 jobs last month, followed by healthcare and manufacturing. Conversely, September saw a 17,000-job gain in sectors including repair, maintenance, and other household and personal services.

Young workers aged 15 to 24 were particularly affected by last month's losses, with 48,000 fewer jobs. Women aged 25 to 54 also saw employment decline.

Provincially, Quebec was notably affected, losing 49,000 jobs last month, while Ontario and British Columbia each lost 20,000 positions. In contrast, Alberta added 23,000 jobs.

What's the link between these numbers and the interest rate?

As is its wont, the Bank of Canada will consider the September figures before its next interest rate decision, scheduled for October 28. The central bank's policy rate has been at 2.25% for nearly a year, which most economists see as somewhat stimulating.

TD Bank's senior economist Andrew Hencic indicated that two months of weak labor market reports between Bank of Canada decisions would dampen calls for interest rate hikes.

Thus, all signs point to the Bank of Canada keeping rates unchanged this month, as new tariffs are likely to slow economic activity and help control inflation.

On September 16, 2025, Ms. Navanethem "Navi" Pillay, former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (2008-2014), and former judge at the International Criminal Court, oversaw the release of a 72-page report by the UN Commission of Inquiry.

Many believe this report may have changed the course of history, as it revealed (without intending to) long-hidden colonial agendas and partisan alliances that have drained resources from less powerful countries for centuries. It also served as a stark reminder of the role militarily powerful nations and their allies have played in bullying, arm-twisting, and outright stealing from nations unable to defend themselves.

So, what made this report so special that it attracted the ire of the U.S., Israel, and their Western allies?

The answer is simple: truth. Pillay's report stated plainly that Israel, a client state of America, had committed genocide in Gaza with brazen impunity. High-ranking Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, were documented as having incited and supported these horrific acts without remorse.

While the report was damaging to the US and Israel, the situation turned positively sour today when the Nobel Committee in Oslo, Norway, announced that Navi Pillay would receive this year's Nobel Peace Prize for the report.

"It's amazing news; we need more dedication and commitment to human rights," said Shabia Mantoo, spokesperson for the UN human rights office, in a statement to reporters in Geneva.

The UN human rights body declared that Pillay's Nobel Prize win represented a collective victory for human rights and for all those seeking justice and accountability through bodies like the International Criminal Court.

However, not everyone welcomed the news. As expected, some were furious.

The United States was the first out of the gate.

Donald Trump's administration issued its usual "sanctions" against the International Criminal Court, putting the US on a diplomatic collision course with its European allies who were caught between appeasing a geriatric superpower and responding to their own citizens' outrage over Israel's genocide of 78,000 Gazans, including 21,000 dead children.

"President Trump will never allow the International Criminal Court to prosecute Americans," exclaimed Secretary of State Marco Rubio, without clarifying which Americans he meant—unless Netanyahu and his family have somehow become US citizens overnight, which wouldn't surprise anyone.

Israel's response was predictable; in addition to claims of antisemitism, which they know is losing its impact from overuse, they launched a series of brand new accusations against Pillay.

"If there were an award for lies, hatred, and blood libels, Navi Pillay would not just be a contender; she'd be the frontrunner," the Israeli Foreign Ministry stated on X. They continued, "Her role in the relentless, politically motivated demonization of Israel speaks volumes."

The ministry further added, "Awarding Pillay the Nobel Peace Prize isn't recognition of justice. It's the grotesque weaponization of an award to legitimize anti-Israel hatred and prejudice."

Yet, truth has its defenders. Nazhat Shameem Khan, Deputy Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), condemned the US sanctions against the ICC, explaining that they are futile and will not impede the tribunal's work now or in the future.

Meanwhile, ICC President Tomoko Akane spoke out against the attacks on Pillay and the report, stating, "This (award) is an important recognition of the vital role that international justice plays as a cornerstone of lasting peace."

They face charges under anti-terrorism legislation and other criminal laws.

Khalid has denied the allegations, while his prolonged detention without trial has drawn criticism from human rights organizations concerned about the use of national security laws against political dissent.

In announcing the award, Front Line Defenders said Khalid's imprisonment reflected a broader pattern in India involving the use of anti-terrorism legislation to suppress dissent and restrictive bail provisions that effectively punish defendants before conviction.

The organization also criticized the role of sections of the Indian media in shaping public perceptions of activists accused in politically sensitive cases.

It warned that such practices disproportionately affect human rights defenders, journalists and students exercising their rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression.

Front Line Defenders specifically challenged the prosecution's reliance on a speech Khalid delivered in Amravati, Maharashtra, in February 2020 as evidence of an alleged conspiracy.

The organization said the speech did not constitute incitement to violence.

During the address, Khalid had called for peaceful demonstrations against the citizenship law, invoked Mahatma Gandhi's principles of nonviolence and urged protesters to organize demonstrations during then-US President Donald Trump's visit to India.

The citizenship legislation, enacted in 2019, introduced religion-based eligibility for expedited Indian citizenship for certain migrants from neighboring countries while excluding Muslims, triggering widespread protests over concerns that it undermined India's secular constitutional principles.

Front Line Defenders' annual awards recognize individuals who face serious risks because of their work defending human rights.

Other recipients of the 2026 award include Iranian anti-death penalty campaigner Ahmadreza Haeri, Angolan democracy activist Laurinda Manuel Gouveia, Brazilian transgender rights defender Adda Vyctoria Caetano and Serbian feminist peacebuilder Ljiljana Nešić.

Khalid's recognition comes as his continued imprisonment remains a prominent example of concerns over the treatment of Muslim activists and the use of anti-terrorism laws against dissent in India.
NEW DELHI, India (MNTV) — Four Indian Muslim migrant workers spent more than a month in detention in India's Chhattisgarh state after police suspected them of being undocumented Bangladeshi immigrants, despite their families maintaining that they were Indian citizens with valid identity documents.

The men, identified as Safiqul Islam, Sabir Sheikh, Nasiruddin Sheikh and Laltu Sheikh, were released Wednesday night after spending 33 days in custody following intervention by the Calcutta High Court, which questioned the legal basis for their continued detention.

The four are residents of Murshidabad district in West Bengal, an eastern Indian state bordering Bangladesh. They were among 23 migrant workers detained by Chhattisgarh Police on September 4 while working in Bilaspur, where they had traveled to earn a living.

According to their families, the workers were engaged in street vending and other informal occupations in the Chunchiyapara-Ganesh Nagar area when authorities questioned their nationality.

Relatives said the men produced Indian voter identification cards, Aadhaar identity cards and Permanent Account Number cards, which are issued by Indian government authorities for identification and taxation purposes.

Despite possessing these documents, the workers were taken into custody on suspicion of being Bangladeshi nationals and subsequently transferred to a detention facility in Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh.

Nineteen of the detained workers were released on Sept. 18 after authorities reportedly verified their identities. However, the remaining four continued to be held, leaving their families struggling to secure their release.

Their detention comes amid growing concerns over the treatment of Bengali-speaking Muslims in India, particularly migrant laborers from West Bengal who have faced allegations of being undocumented Bangladeshis in states governed by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya citizenship of Indian Muslims, exposing them to detention, harassment and possible deportation.

The families of the four workers eventually approached the Calcutta High Court, arguing that the men were long-standing residents of Murshidabad and that disputes concerning the deletion of their names from electoral rolls were already pending before the relevant citizenship.

Trinamool Congress lawmaker Samirul Islam said Chhattisgarh authorities had requested verification of the workers' residence from Murshidabad district officials but had not the predominantly Muslim neighborhood of Jyotinagar Colony has been deprived of water following the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) electoral victory in West reportedly shared their water with affected Muslim families, although residents say the arrangement is insufficient to meet daily needs.

Those helping have also expressed concerns that their own water connections could face retaliation.

The allegations have been linked to remarks attributed to local BJP legislator Ritesh Tiwari, who reportedly suggested that he would not undertake development work for Muslims who had not voted for him.

The allegations of politically motivated discrimination have not been independently established.

Islam has urged the UN human rights office to seek explanations from Indian authorities about the continued disruption, measures being taken to provide immediate relief and plans to restore a permanent drinking water supply.

He also called for particular attention to the health risks facing children, elderly people and other vulnerable residents.

The lawmaker argued that access to clean drinking water is an internationally recognized human right and that the situation should not be treated merely as a municipal infrastructure problem.

The United Nations General Assembly formally recognized the human right to safe and clean drinking water and sanitation in 2010, emphasizing their importance for the enjoyment of life and other fundamental rights.

India's constitutional framework also recognizes access to safe drinking water as part of the right to life under Article 21, as interpreted by the country's higher courts.
Indian Muslim lawmaker seeks UN help over water cutoff to projects, with local production companies highlighting the country’s talent, diverse locations and growing professional capabilities.

Industry representatives say investment in production standards could help attract more foreign projects.

According to Campaign Middle East, Dhafir Ayad, co-founder and film director at Frame Vision Productions, believes Iraq’s production market has become increasingly connected to the wider regional industry.

He said his company had developed processes intended to meet international expectations, from project planning and location management to filming and post-production.

Ayad said the industry’s reputation is changing as Iraqi companies demonstrate their ability to deliver projects involving international directors and creative teams.

He described a shift in foreign clients’ questions, from whether filming in Iraq is possible to what kinds of projects the country can accommodate.

The company has focused on building a production structure covering preparation, creative development, crew coordination, logistics and post-production.

Ayad said these capabilities have helped it work with regional and international collaborators while creating opportunities for other companies to explore Iraq.

Changing expectations among Iraqi clients are also influencing the sector. Ayad said local audiences and businesses increasingly compare domestic productions with international work, placing greater pressure on production houses to improve quality and professional standards.

Collaborations between Iraqi specialists and international professionals have also supported knowledge transfer, according to Ayad.

Such partnerships can help strengthen technical skills, establish more consistent working practices and develop a production culture capable of handling larger projects.

Ayad expects the next stage of development to involve a transition from consuming imported production services to exporting Iraqi production expertise.

He identified the country’s creative talent, varied filming locations, cultural heritage and expanding commercial market as potential advantages.

However, attracting international projects will depend on more than location and talent alone. Production companies will need reliable logistics, skilled crews, professional project management and the ability to meet clients’ technical and creative requirements.

Ayad said Frame Vision intends to continue investing in local capabilities and talent development. He believes Iraq could become a more prominent destination for regional and international production if the country sustains the development of its production ecosystem.
ABU DHABI, UAE (MNTV) — The Al Sidr Environmental Film Festival has returned to Abu Dhabi for its fifth edition, bringing documentaries, animation and discussions exploring humanity’s relationship with the natural world. The festival runs from October 9 to 11 at New York University Abu Dhabi.

According to The National, this year’s theme is “Mend,” inspired by the Arabic word rammim, meaning to repair or restore something valuable. Organized in collaboration with the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi, the festival aims to encourage audiences to reconsider their relationship with the environment.

Artistic director Nezar Andary said the festival seeks to encourage curiosity and reflection rather than overwhelm audiences with environmental warnings. He emphasized that meaningful environmental change depends on human action, not cinema alone.

Among the program’s major screenings is Ghost Elephants, a National Geographic documentary directed by Werner Herzog. The film receives its Arabian Gulf premiere at the festival, exploring the search for elusive elephant herds in Angola.

The program also features Fire of Love, the Oscar-nominated documentary about French volcanologists Katia and Maurice Krafft. Their scientific research and fascination with volcanoes form the center of a story connecting scientific discovery with personal relationships.

Other selections include Fungi: Web of Life, narrated by Icelandic musician Björk, and Chuuraa, a short film by Evgenia Arbugaeva. The festival will also screen Time and Water, a 2026 documentary by Sara Dosa, at the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and NYU Abu Dhabi.

The program extends beyond wildlife and conventional environmental documentaries. A restored edition of Shyam Benegal’s 1976 film Manthan examines rural dairy cooperatives, collective action and social change, demonstrating how questions of class and community can intersect with environmental concerns.

The festival will also present episodes of Conservation Diaries, a documentary series following scientists, volunteers and conservationists working across the UAE’s wadis, mangroves, coastlines and rural communities. The series highlights practical efforts to protect biodiversity.

Since its establishment, the festival has attracted more than 5,000 attendees and engaged approximately 2,000 students from more than 20 Abu Dhabi schools. Organizers hope the screenings and educational activities will encourage lasting environmental awareness.
