GTA News: Canada Post Will Stop Delivering Mail to Your Door – But When?
For millions of residents in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), the familiar sound of the mail carrier dropping letters through the front door slot is about to become a thing of the past. Canada Post is ending home delivery as part of a significant, government-mandated restructuring plan.
The Crown corporation has officially entered the implementation phase of its transformation, which will convert approximately four million addresses to community mailboxes over the coming years.
As a result, some GTA households will see their door-to-door mail delivery end as early as this month. The northwestern corner of Etobicoke is first in line, specifically affecting homes with postal codes starting with M9V and M9W. This change will impact roughly 18,000 residences, according to figures released in the spring.
Canada Post estimates that it will take several years for the new model to reach other parts of the GTA, noting that “converting densely populated urban cores presents additional challenges.”
According to the Crown corporation’s online search tool, residents in downtown and North York will not see the switch until 2031.
Canada Post spokesperson Jon Hamilton stated in April that once the plan is fully completed, it could save the corporation close to $400 million annually. “It takes about twice as much money to serve a door-to-door address as it does to serve a community mailbox address,” Hamilton said.
In a release, Canada Post also said it will update its online search tool as it finalizes the schedule. “Customers with door-to-door delivery will continue to receive advance notice and communication throughout the process before any changes are made.”
