Qatar launches sports scholarships to help athletes earn university degrees
New government-backed pathway allows talented athletes to pursue higher education while continuing competitive sports careers
DOHA, Qatar (MNTV) — Qatar’s Ministry of Education and Higher Education has launched a new sports scholarship pathway under the Government Scholarship Program, allowing talented student athletes to pursue university education while continuing their athletic careers.
The initiative was introduced through the ministry’s Higher Education Affairs Sector in coordination with the Ministry of Sports and Youth. An orientation session was held for prospective applicants, bringing together students, parents and representatives of relevant organizations.
According to the ministry, the program is designed to identify and support promising national sports talent by creating opportunities for athletes to balance academic studies with professional sporting development.
Officials said the scholarship pathway aims to produce graduates who excel both academically and athletically, enabling them to represent Qatar in international competitions while contributing to the country’s long-term development goals.
Under the new track, government scholarships will be awarded based on demonstrated sporting talent, allowing eligible students to enroll in various academic disciplines at universities participating in Qatar’s domestic scholarship program.
To qualify, applicants must be nominated by the Ministry of Sports and Youth and the Qatar Olympic Committee, meet the general requirements of the Government Scholarship Program, secure unconditional admission to a participating university, and commit to continuing their athletic careers throughout their studies.
The ministry said scholarship recipients attending eligible private universities will receive tuition support in accordance with approved regulations. The program also provides coordination with relevant sports authorities and offers access to employment-linked scholarship opportunities under existing government policies to strengthen graduates’ readiness for the labor market.
Applications for the sports scholarship pathway during the second admission cycle for public universities will be accepted through the Government Scholarship Platform between Nov. 15 and Dec. 30.
The ministry said the initiative reflects Qatar’s commitment to investing in young sporting talent while strengthening cooperation between the education and sports sectors to develop future generations capable of combining academic achievement with sporting excellence.
