Algeria’s Su-57E reportedly sighted in flight amid export deal speculation
Grainy video fuels claims Algeria became first foreign buyer as officials remain silent on acquisition
ALGIERS, Algeria (MNTV) — A low-quality video circulating on social media appears to show a Russian Su-57 fighter jet flying over Algeria, reviving speculation that the North African country has become the first export customer for the fifth-generation aircraft.
The footage, dated Feb 7, shows a stealth fighter silhouette accompanied by engine sounds consistent with the Su-57’s AL-41F1 powerplants, though the poor image quality makes identification inconclusive.
The clip was traced to an Algeria-based social media account, and no official markings were visible. Algerian defense authorities have not commented on the reports.
Media outlets in Algeria and Russia have claimed since 2025 that Algiers secured a deal for the Su-57, but neither the United Aircraft Corporation nor officials from either country have confirmed the sale.
Earlier statements by Russian arms export officials indicated a foreign buyer without naming the country, while later reports suggested Algeria ordered two aircraft with plans to expand to a full squadron.
The alleged sighting was reported near Oum El Bouaghi Air Base, though independent verification has not been possible. If confirmed, Algeria would become the first international operator of the Su-57 platform.
Algeria’s air force remains heavily equipped with Russian-made aircraft, including MiG-29s, Su-24s, Su-30s, and Su-35s, with additional Su-34s on order, according to recent military balance assessments.
Separately, Russia has continued upgrading its Su-57 fleet, recently delivering new aircraft featuring enhanced defensive systems, cockpit updates, and modified sensors, while testing next-generation engines and weapon configurations as part of ongoing modernization efforts.
