Maldives launches digital system for zakat payments
New platform allows Muslims to pay mandatory charity online, marking shift toward digital governance of faith-based welfare in island nation
MALE, Maldives (MNTV) — The Maldives is preparing to roll out a nationwide digital system for the payment of Fitr Zakat, a mandatory Islamic charitable contribution made at the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, as part of efforts to modernize religious welfare administration.
The initiative follows an agreement signed between Maldives Zakat House and a local digital services provider, enabling zakat payments to be collected online across the country.
The memorandum of understanding was signed at a formal ceremony held at the Ministry of Islamic Affairs. It was executed on behalf of Zakat House by its fund manager, Abdullah Ali, while the private partner was represented by its managing director, Mohamed Yaaniu Rameez.
Zakat House said the agreement establishes a framework for digital zakat collection throughout the Maldives, allowing contributors to make payments through online platforms scheduled to be officially launched by Ramadan this year.
Under the arrangement, zakat payments will be processed without additional service charges, and all funds collected through the digital system will be transferred directly to Zakat House without intermediary fees.
Officials said the system is designed to operate through secure digital platforms, in line with Islamic law’s requirements, with an emphasis on transparency, speed, and reliability in handling charitable funds.
Zakat House said the move forms part of a broader effort to modernize zakat administration, enabling immediate transfers and creating a more accessible and inclusive system to ensure funds reach eligible recipients efficiently, particularly in a geographically dispersed island nation.
The Maldives joins a growing number of Muslim-majority countries seeking to integrate traditional religious obligations into digital public infrastructure, reflecting wider shifts toward online governance and welfare delivery.
