Trump threatens to cut funding for NYC if Mamdani wins
US President Donald Trump has warned that New York City’s federal funding could be slashed if voters elect Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani as mayor
WASHINGTON, United States (MNTV) – US President Donald Trump has warned that New York City’s federal funding could be slashed if voters elect Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani as mayor.
Speaking during a 60 Minutes interview aired Sunday, Trump dismissed Mamdani—who currently leads the polls and appears poised for victory—as a “communist.”
“It’s gonna be hard for me as the president to give a lot of money to New York,” Trump said. “Because if you have a communist running New York, all you’re doing is wasting the money you’re sending there.”
The president’s comments echo his earlier threats to withdraw federal funding from California over Governor Gavin Newsom’s progressive policies.
Mamdani, 34, gained national attention after defeating former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the city’s Democratic mayoral primary. His campaign, rooted in progressive economic and housing reforms, has drawn strong support from young and working-class voters.
Trump reiterated his warning in the interview, saying, “Whoever’s mayor of New York is going to have to behave themselves, or the federal government is coming down very tough on them financially.”
The president has repeatedly branded Mamdani a “communist,” despite the candidate’s identification as a Democratic socialist.
Mamdani has not yet responded to Trump’s latest remarks.
