Zohran Mamdani says New York City should uphold ICC arrest warrant for Netanyahu if he visits
NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani says the city should enforce ICC arrest warrant for Netanyahu if he visits
NEW YORK, United States (MNTV) – New York City Democratic Socialist mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani said the city should honor the International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he were to visit.
“I’ve said that this is a city that believes in international law and wants to uplift and uphold those beliefs,” Mamdani told Fox News’ Martha MacCallum on The Story on Wednesday.
MacCallum countered that the United States does not recognize the ICC, noting Washington is not a party to the treaty establishing the court.
“The Criminal Court, however, has issued a warrant for the arrest of Benjamin Netanyahu, as it has for Vladimir Putin,” Mamdani responded.
“I believe we should uphold arrest warrants by the International Criminal Court — and we would do so only in accordance with all existing laws.”
Mamdani emphasized that he would not create new legislation to ensure Netanyahu’s arrest. When asked if he believed NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch would allow such an arrest, Mamdani declined to answer directly. Pressed again, he said, “I can tell you that I’m going to exhaust every legal option in front of me, not make new laws to do so.”
Netanyahu faces an ICC warrant over alleged war crimes in Gaza. The United States has rejected the court’s jurisdiction and does not recognize its authority.
During the interview, Mamdani also refused to credit President Donald Trump for brokering last week’s ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. “It’s too early to say,” he remarked. “But if it proves to be something lasting and durable, then that’s where you give credit.”
When asked whether Hamas should lay down its arms, Mamdani again avoided a direct answer. “I don’t really have opinions about the future of Hamas and Israel beyond the question of justice and safety,” he said.
“Anything that happens has to abide by international law — and that applies to Hamas, the Israeli military, or anyone else you could ask me about.”
Earlier this month, Mamdani publicly defended New York Attorney General Letitia James after her indictment by a Virginia grand jury, reiterating his support for progressive leadership in city and state politics.
