Chicago Tribune fires 3 Muslim journalists, union condemns move
The Guild condemned the outcome, warning that the loss of Muslim voices diminishes the Tribune’s ability to cover diverse communities
CHICAGO (MNTV) — The Chicago Tribune is facing backlash after five Muslim journalists left the paper in recent weeks, prompting concerns of targeted cuts and weakened community representation.
The departures followed staff reductions by Alden Global Capital, the Tribune’s owner, through layoffs, buyouts, and reassignments.
The Chicago Tribune Guild said nine colleagues have left since the cuts began, including three Muslim journalists directly laid off and two more who exited through buyouts or reassignments.
The Guild condemned the outcome, warning that the loss of Muslim voices diminishes the Tribune’s ability to cover diverse communities.
“Our colleagues brought perspectives that made the Tribune better,” the union said, adding that they told stories others could not.
Union leaders demanded an explanation from management and urged greater respect for Muslim journalists, stressing that representation in newsrooms is essential for fair and accurate reporting.
