Up to 25 cm of Snow Forecast for Ontario This Week.
If today, Monday, felt ‘turbulent’ with high-speed winds sweeping through major parts of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA)—sending garbage bins flying across streets—tomorrow and the coming days will be much calmer in comparison, despite the return of snow.
The Weather Network announced this morning that the high winds and rainy conditions expected on Monday, March 16, will “quickly” transition to cold, snowy weather in the coming days as a cold front moves across southern and eastern Ontario. This front will bring a mix of spring and winter weather.
The rain showers observed today (March 16) will “change rapidly” throughout the day and are expected to turn into snow by Tuesday morning. According to The Weather Network, Tuesday’s afternoon and evening commutes could be affected by “bursts of heavy snow.”
What will exacerbate the situation for motorists and pedestrians are the “rapidly dropping temperatures” and strong gusts of wind reaching 60-80+ km/h. These conditions will cause wet surfaces to freeze, significantly reduce visibility, and create “slick and hazardous conditions” on roads and walkways. The Network warns that “high winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break, and local utility outages are also possible.”
There is potential for road and school closures on Tuesday, but parents are urged to check with schools directly before deciding on a safe course of action for their children.
Below-freezing temperatures with wind chills approaching the minus teens are also expected in southern Ontario.
GTA-Specific Weather Alert: A widespread five to 10 centimeters of snow is forecasted from the GTA to Ottawa by Tuesday morning, March 17, but snowfall totals will be higher closer to Lake Huron and Georgian Bay through Wednesday, March 18.
Environment Canada expects a chance of flurries with a high of -3°C on Tuesday, which will feel closer to -19°C in the morning for Toronto and surrounding areas.
A high of -2°C is forecast for the region on Wednesday, before more seasonable daytime highs of 4°C return on Thursday and Friday.
Big Snow Probability: Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, including Owen Sound, Kincardine, Hanover, and Mitchell, may see up to 25 cm of snow through Wednesday. Meanwhile, Goderich, Listowel, Mount Forest, Collingwood, Barrie, and Orillia could receive 10 to 15 centimeters of rain.
