Yemen’s Houthis government launch new phase of blockade on Israel
Yemeni government warns international shipping firms to halt dealings with Israeli ports or face attacks
SANAA, Yemen (MNTV) — Yemen’s Houthi government announced on Sunday the start of a new phase in its maritime operations against Israel, declaring an expanded naval blockade in response to what it called the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
In an official statement, the group said its fourth phase “will target all vessels operated by any company maintaining trade with Israeli ports, regardless of nationality or the ships’ destinations, in any area within reach of our missiles or drones.”
The Houthis urged all international firms to immediately halt any commercial activity with Israeli ports, warning that failure to do so would put their vessels at risk.
The group further called on world governments to “apply pressure on Israel to end its aggression and lift the blockade on Gaza,” adding, “No free person can accept what is happening.”
Houthi forces have stepped up their missile and drone attacks on Israel since March, when Israeli forces resumed large-scale assaults on Gaza following a brief ceasefire.
Since November 2023, the group has also struck or threatened commercial shipping in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and Arabian Sea in what it describes as a campaign of solidarity with Palestinians.
According to Gaza’s health authorities, more than 59,800 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks since October 2023.
