We Have All Read History. Now Watch It Happen!
Have you ever seen a smile that dazzles, while the eyes conceal a thousand stories and countless tears? Stories so shocking and distressing that they could make even the most decent human give up on humanity itself. Tears that have flowed continuously for 77 long years—years of living in what has been described as the “world’s largest open-air prison” (Banksy).
For 77 years, Palestinians have been deprived of their human dignity, living under total subjugation in the shadow of Israeli tanks, where every breath could be their last. It’s hard to imagine such a reality when one is free. But for Palestinians, this is their everyday life. More than three generations have been born in these conditions, constantly surveilled by an occupying force, watching drones overhead, and facing those who act like guards outside their homes.
These guards can take whatever they want, commit acts of violence against anyone, and kill entire families and neighbourhoods without accountability—no questions asked, no answers required. The world, especially the Islamic world, seems to have given up on Palestine. Palestinians have become pawns in a complex geopolitical struggle. The “brotherhood” that leaders often speak about, which they cherish, support, and uphold, has become difficult to maintain. Muslim leaders face a challenging choice: uphold their values in support of their ummah or accept the wealth the West offers. Unfortunately, for most, the choice is straightforward: they opt for wealth.
It falls to ordinary people, like you and me, to stand up and be counted; to link arms in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Palestine. Despite countless deaths and horrific atrocities inflicted upon them, Palestinians continue to endure. The least we can do is awaken the world, dispel the cobwebs of Israeli propaganda from their eyes and minds, and reveal the truth: that Palestine and Palestinians have never been the problem. They were hosts—willing and eager to assist those they believed needed help. As Muslims, they felt it was their duty to assist refugees from distant lands. They opened their arms and homes to people, their ancestors had previously sheltered and protected during the Crusades. In doing so, they unwittingly changed the fate of Palestine and its people.
But enough about the past. Today is a new day, and Alhamdulillah for that. Nothing happens without His Will, and we are witnessing His Will in action as we prepare to celebrate something that seemed unimaginable a few years ago.
On September 21, 2025, Canada witnessed a historic moment with Prime Minister Mark Carney’s decision to join 140 other UN member states in recognising the State of Palestine. Recently, Toronto’s mayor, Olivia Chow, boldly stated that what has happened in Palestine constitutes Genocide. The next significant step is approaching.
On November 17, 2025, at 9:00 am. ET, Toronto City Hall will join millions of human rights activists around the world, along with the few surviving Palestinians, as they watch the Palestinian flag rise above City Hall on the 37th anniversary of the Palestinian Declaration of Independence. A day earlier, on November 16, both Brampton (at 10:00 am ET) and Mississauga (at 2:00 pm ET) will hoist the flag in solidarity. This is a historic moment, carrying the dreams of thousands of Palestinians who have been mercilessly killed, dreaming of just such a day. Be there to show the surviving people of Gaza that we care!
