Uzbekistan completes 5G rollout in Tashkent Metro
For first time in Central Asia, Tashkent Metro delivers continuous 5G at stations and 4.5G in tunnels, boosting digital access
TASHKENT, Uzbekistan (MNTV) — Passengers on the Tashkent Metro can now stay connected across all stations and tunnels after the completion of a landmark mobile network project, officials confirmed this week. The upgrade makes the Uzbek capital the first city in Central Asia to offer uninterrupted metro coverage with next-generation technology.
According to Uz Daily, the initiative was carried out in cooperation with the Tashkent Metro and Huawei. The system provides 5G service at stations and 4.5G coverage through tunnels, enabling passengers to make high-quality voice calls, stream ultra-high-definition video, and broadcast live with average speeds of 142 Mbps both above and below ground.
The project involved extensive technical work, including laying more than 100 kilometers of optical cable, installing over 200 radio transmitters, and mounting 150 kilometers of electrical cable.
Alongside improving passenger connectivity, the effort also strengthened the metro’s internal communications systems.
Huawei’s general director in Uzbekistan, Tan Xiaoxiang, said expanding fifth-generation networks would drive economic growth and open new opportunities for digital integration in urban transport.
Metro official Shakhzod Agzamov added that more than 100 specialists worked on the installation, describing the logistics of deploying equipment in crowded tunnels as a complex operation requiring close coordination.
Officials said the project represents a milestone for Tashkent’s digital infrastructure, allowing commuters to remain connected without interruption throughout their journey across the Chilanzar, Uzbekistan and Yunusabad lines.
