Utah governor says suspect in Charlie Kirk killing had become ‘more political’
The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Tyler Robinson, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of capital murder, weapons violations, and obstruction
UTAH, United States (MNTV) — Utah Governor Spencer Cox said the man accused of fatally shooting conservative commentator Charlie Kirk had grown increasingly political in the weeks leading up to the attack and told a relative about Kirk’s planned visit to the state.
The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Tyler Robinson, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of capital murder, weapons violations, and obstruction. He is expected to be formally charged Tuesday, authorities said.
At a news briefing, Cox described evidence investigators believe links Robinson to the shooting, including engravings on bullet casings found in a Mauser .30-caliber bolt-action rifle recovered along the suspect’s escape route. Messages from a Discord account linked to Robinson allegedly discussed a scoped rifle, engraved bullets, and a plan to wrap the weapon in a towel.
Ammunition recovered with the firearm bore taunting anti-fascist and meme-inspired messages, one reading, “Hey, fascist! Catch!” Cox said.
The governor praised Robinson’s family for helping authorities locate him. Robinson’s father reportedly recognized him in FBI-released photos and, after initially refusing, persuaded him to surrender with the help of a youth pastor connected to the US Marshals Service.
The arrest followed a 36-hour manhunt after Kirk was killed by a single rifle shot fired from a rooftop while visiting a Utah university.
Officials have not confirmed a motive but say the investigation remains active.
