US labels Antifa a “domestic terrorist” group after Charlie Kirk shooting
US President Donald Trump has announced that his administration is designating the left-wing Antifa as terrorist group
WASHINGTON, United States (MNTV) — US President Donald Trump has announced that his administration is designating the left-wing Antifa movement as a domestic terrorist organization, following the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in Utah.
Trump said he also wants investigations into individuals and organizations allegedly financing Antifa activities.
“I will strongly recommend that those funding Antifa be thoroughly investigated in accordance with the highest legal standards,” he said.
The announcement comes days after Tyler Robinson was charged with murdering Kirk during a speaking event on a Utah university campus. While authorities have not linked the killing to any political group, Trump and close aides have suggested Antifa and other left-wing networks were connected.
Attorney General Pam Bondi and presidential adviser Stephen Miller pointed to progressive groups — including Indivisible and the Open Society Foundations, founded by George Soros — as potential sources of support for violent extremism. Neither group has been formally accused of wrongdoing.
Legal scholars questioned the move, noting the United States has no law allowing domestic organizations to be formally designated as terrorist groups, and that Antifa is a loosely organized movement without central leadership.
Civil rights advocates and Democrats warned the step could chill dissent and misuse federal power ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
“This is about targeting political opponents, not public safety,” the ACLU said in a statement.
As of now, the declaration carries no immediate legal force, but it underscores growing political tensions over violence and polarization in US public life.
