UN expert urges global arms embargo, trade suspension with Israel over Gaza genocide
Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese tells Human Rights Council Israel is waging a “cruel genocide,” calls for legal action against complicit companies
GAZA, Palestine (MNTV) — United Nations human rights expert has called on all countries to impose an arms embargo and suspend trade and financial relations with Israel, citing an “apocalyptic” humanitarian situation in Gaza and saying Israel is committing one of the “cruelest genocides in modern history.”
Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, made the plea during an address to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, where she presented her latest report detailing alleged violations committed by Israel in Gaza.
“The situation in the occupied Palestinian territory is apocalyptic,” Albanese said, urging the international community to take concrete action to halt Israeli genocide and hold actors accountable. Her remarks were met with strong applause from Council members.
Albanese charged Israel of conducting a systematic and deliberate military campaign in Gaza and the West Bank, and said more than 60 companies were complicit in sustaining the Israeli occupation and war effort — including firms that provide technology, weapons, and logistical support.
“This is not just a list of companies — it is a system,” she told the Council. “We must reverse the tide. The international community cannot continue to look away while international law is being shredded.”
She called on all states to enforce a full arms embargo on Israel, suspend existing trade agreements, and ensure companies operating in support of the Israeli military or settlement infrastructure are subject to legal accountability.
The Israeli delegation was not present during the session, adhering to a recently adopted policy of disengagement with the Human Rights Council.
