UAE enacts law to protect children from digital risks
Federal decree targets digital risks, regulates platforms, and promotes safe technology use under Year of the Family framework
ABU DHABI, UAE (MNTV) – The United Arab Emirates has issued a new federal decree law aimed at protecting children from digital risks and ensuring the safe and responsible use of technology across online platforms.
According to The National News, the legislation comes as part of the UAE’s declaration of 2026 as the Year of the Family and reflects the country’s broader strategy to safeguard children’s physical, psychological, and moral wellbeing in an increasingly digital environment.
Authorities say the law is designed to curb exposure to harmful content and practices that could negatively affect child development.
Under the decree, the law applies to internet service providers and a wide range of digital platforms operating in or targeting users within the UAE.
These include websites, search engines, mobile applications, messaging services, social media networks, online gaming and streaming platforms, podcasts, video-on-demand services, and e-commerce platforms.
The framework also places defined obligations on parents and caregivers, outlining their responsibilities in ensuring the digital safety of children under their care.
Officials emphasized that child protection is approached as a shared responsibility between families, platforms, and regulators.
Key provisions include the establishment of a national digital safety framework, stronger protections for children’s data privacy, and regulated reporting mechanisms to ensure the swift handling of harmful or abusive online content.
The law also mandates the creation of a Child Digital Safety Council, chaired by the Minister of Family, to enhance coordination among relevant authorities.
The decree further calls for a nationwide awareness program aimed at families and children, promoting positive digital behavior and reinforcing preventive measures within households, as the UAE continues efforts to build a safe and child-friendly digital ecosystem.
