Turkmenistan to mark World Bicycle Day with nationwide cycling events
Ashgabat, Arkadag, and provinces to host rides, competitions, and education programs from May 30 to June 3
ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan (MNTV) — Turkmenistan will mark World Bicycle Day on June 3 with a nationwide series of events promoting cycling and sustainable transport, including mass rides, sporting competitions, and public awareness programs.
A large-scale bike ride is scheduled to take place in the capital, Ashgabat, on June 3, while similar activities will be held across the provinces, as well as in the city of Arkadag, beginning May 30.
The program includes races, fitness events, educational campaigns, and scientific conferences focused on cycling and public health.
The announcement was made during a recent cabinet meeting, where senior officials emphasized the need for extensive preparation to ensure smooth organization and public participation across all regions.
World Bicycle Day was established by the United Nations in 2018 following a proposal by Turkmenistan at the 72nd session of the General Assembly. Since then, the country has used the occasion to highlight cycling as a low-cost, eco-friendly mode of transport and an accessible way to promote public health.
In 2022, the UN General Assembly adopted another resolution led by Turkmenistan—titled “Integration of mainstream bicycling into public transportation systems for sustainable development”—which called for more inclusive transport planning.
While Turkmenistan has often promoted physical fitness and sport as part of its broader health policy, World Bicycle Day has become a flagship occasion for national campaigns focused on wellness, clean mobility, and civic participation.
