Türkiye ranks second globally as top destination for Muslim travelers
Mastercard and CrescentRating highlight Türkiye’s growing appeal with heritage tourism and halal-friendly services
ISTANBUL, Türkiye (MNTV) — Türkiye has been named the world’s second most preferred destination for Muslim travelers, according to the newly released “Muslim Travel Preferences” report by Mastercard in collaboration with CrescentRating.
The annual report, which tracks global travel trends in the Muslim market, credits Türkiye’s rise in the rankings to its rich Islamic heritage, diverse tourism offerings, and tailored services that accommodate the religious and cultural needs of Muslim visitors.
In 2023, the number of Muslim travelers worldwide surged by 25%, reaching 176 million, the report said.
That figure is projected to increase to 245 million by 2030, with global Muslim travel spending forecast to reach $230 billion.
This growth presents major opportunities for countries that align with the values and expectations of Muslim tourists.
While Malaysia maintained its lead due to its comprehensive halal travel infrastructure, Türkiye climbed to second place, sharing the spot with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
Türkiye’s high ranking is attributed to its accessible halal-certified options, inclusive hospitality practices, and proactive efforts to cater to Muslim travelers.
Türkiye’s religious and historical landmarks continue to attract faith-based tourists. Sites such as Istanbul’s iconic Sultanahmet Mosque, the Mevlana Museum in Konya, and the historic mosques of Şanlıurfa draw millions of visitors each year.
The country’s tourism sector has also evolved to provide specialized amenities including women-only beach resorts, designated prayer facilities, and halal dining establishments.
The report also identifies emerging trends shaping the Muslim travel industry, such as the rise of digital platforms for halal trip planning, the growing interest in solo travel among younger Muslim travelers, and the popularity of wellness retreats that offer a break from digital life while supporting spiritual reflection.
Türkiye’s strong performance in the rankings reflects its growing status as a global leader in faith-based and culturally conscious tourism, offering a blend of tradition, modernity, and hospitality that resonates with Muslim visitors from around the world.
