Trump urges Europe to halt Russian oil imports, calls for tougher sanctions
“Europe is buying oil from Russia. I don’t want them to buy oil, and the sanctions they’re putting on are not tough enough,” Trump said
WASHINGTON, United States (MNTV) — US President Donald Trump said Sunday he is prepared to impose stronger sanctions on Russia but insisted European nations must stop buying Russian oil and align their actions with Washington.
“Europe is buying oil from Russia. I don’t want them to buy oil, and the sanctions they’re putting on are not tough enough,” Trump told reporters while returning to the White House from New Jersey. “I’m willing to do sanctions, but they’re going to have to toughen up their sanctions commensurate with what I’m doing.”
The president’s comments echoed a message he posted on Truth Social, the platform he owns, saying he is ready to introduce “major sanctions on Russia” once all NATO members adopt similar measures and end purchases of Russian oil.
Trump accused some allies of failing to fully confront Moscow, describing ongoing oil imports as “shocking.” He has also threatened secondary sanctions on countries that continue to buy Russian crude if there is no progress toward ending the war in Ukraine.
Last month, Trump raised tariffs on Indian goods by 25%, citing New Delhi’s continued imports of Russian oil, underscoring his willingness to penalize nations that bypass US restrictions.
