Trump reportedly blocked Israeli plan to assassinate Iran’s supreme leader
US officials say Israel proposed strike on Khamenei; Trump rejected the move amid heightened tensions
WASHINGTON, US (MNTV) — US President Donald Trump vetoed an Israeli proposal to assassinate Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, two senior American officials said on Sunday.
The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to Reuters, said the Israeli plan was raised following Tel Aviv’s large-scale strikes on Iranian nuclear and military facilities.
According to one US official, the White House pushed back on the idea, citing the absence of direct American casualties.
“Have the Iranians killed an American yet? No. Until they do, we’re not even talking about going after the political leadership,” the official said.
The report also indicated that US and Israeli officials have been in close communication since the outbreak of hostilities on Friday, which saw Israel launch strikes across Iran.
Although it remains unclear whether Trump personally delivered the rejection, the officials confirmed he has been in regular contact with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
When asked about the Reuters report, Netanyahu declined to confirm the discussion during an interview with Fox News, saying, “There are so many false reports of conversations that never happened, and I’m not going to get into that.”
He added, “We’ll do what we need to do. And I think the United States knows what is good for the United States.”
Planned nuclear talks between Washington and Tehran, which were expected to take place in Oman on Sunday, were cancelled following the escalation in hostilities.
