Toronto Is A ‘Leader’, Says Forbes
Toronto is gaining global recognition as a rising leader in climate technology, with Forbes magazine declaring it “one of North America’s most important climate innovation hubs.”
The report credits this status to the City’s world-class universities, scientific expertise, innovative government policies, and a growing talent pool of 285,000 tech workers—a workforce that has increased by over 25% in just five years, outpacing other North American cities. The geography of Toronto also offers a climate advantage, being shielded from hurricanes, wildfires, and drought, with access to abundant freshwater resources.
Tech giants like Google, Microsoft Canada, 1Password, and SAP Canada have established a strong presence in the City, expanding their workforce in anticipation of future challenges. Toronto’s vibrant climate tech ecosystem—including the University of Toronto’s $60M climate institute, MaRS Discovery District, and the Creative Destruction Lab—is being recognized as a major driver of science-based startups.
The report highlights that Toronto is achieving measurable results, with emissions already down 41% from 1990 levels and a projected 45% reduction by next year. Grassroots groups, such as the Toronto Climate Action Network and Project Neutral, are also working to integrate sustainability into the City’s culture.
“In a world rapidly reshaping itself around climate risk,” Forbes writes, “Toronto is both a beacon of climate resilience and a magnet for climate solutions.”
