Tanzania and Algeria strengthen regulatory cooperation in oil and gas exploration
Agreements focus on capacity building, data management, and local participation in petroleum projects
ALGIERS, Algeria (MNTV) — Tanzania’s Petroleum Upstream Regulatory Authority (PURA) and Algeria’s National Agency for the Valorization of Hydrocarbon Resources (ALNAFT) have initiated talks to enhance cooperation in regulating oil and gas exploration and production.
According to Daily News, the meeting, held in Algiers brought together senior officials and experts from both countries.
The Tanzanian delegation, led by Shigela Malosha on behalf of PURA Director General Engineer Charles Sangweni, met with ALNAFT President Samir Bekhti to outline areas of collaboration.
Malosha emphasized that joint efforts would improve efficiency in regulatory oversight, support upstream petroleum development, and foster knowledge-sharing between the two agencies.
“Through training, capacity building, and exchange of expertise, this partnership will enable both institutions to perform at a higher standard,” he said.
Bekhti welcomed the initiative, noting the shared responsibilities of the two regulators despite operating in different contexts.
He stressed that the partnership would generate mutual benefits, particularly in enhancing technical skills and strengthening policy frameworks for hydrocarbon management.
The discussions covered several key areas, including regulatory supervision of oil and gas exploration, petroleum data management, local content development, and the drafting of laws and guidelines to govern the sector.
Both sides expressed interest in promoting the participation of domestic companies in major energy projects, ensuring that oil and gas development also contributes to local economic growth.
The meeting marks a step forward in building stronger energy ties between Tanzania and Algeria, with both regulators viewing the partnership as an opportunity to align best practices and improve governance in their respective petroleum industries.
