Tajikistan to host international paragliding competition
Elite paragliders compete in southern Tajikistan as country looks to boost its image as adventure sports destination
DUSHANBE, Tajikistan (MNTV) — An international paragliding competition titled Open Sky is set to take off from April 26 to May 4 in the dramatic foothills of Khurramzamin, located in Tajikistan’s southern Khatlon province.
Held under the auspices of the President’s Cup, the event aims to spotlight the country’s growing appeal as a destination for global adventure tourism.
The competition will bring together elite athletes from Europe, Asia, the United States, the CIS, and other regions, competing in precision landing and cross-country paragliding, Asia Plus reports.
Participants will navigate 50–60 kilometer routes from altitudes as high as 1,900 meters, showcasing both skill and endurance against the backdrop of Tajikistan’s scenic landscapes.
Khurramzamin’s favorable flying conditions, clean air, and sweeping views have made it an ideal venue for this aerial showcase.
Organizers say the event will celebrate international camaraderie, as athletes fly the flags of their home countries and engage with fellow enthusiasts.
The official opening on April 26 will feature a flag parade, artistic performances, and an aerial display by an AN-24 aircraft.
Diplomats, international organizations, and tourism stakeholders based in Tajikistan are expected to attend.
The event is being jointly organized by the Federation of Paragliding and Ultralight Aircraft of Tajikistan, the Committee for Youth and Sports, and co-sponsored by the Investment and Credit Bank of Tajikistan (ICB).
Alongside the main competitions, attendees can join cultural evenings with traditional music and cuisine, participate in Q&A sessions with athletes, and attend masterclasses led by international paragliding experts.
“This is more than a competition,” said Abdullo Khayrulloyev, President of the Federation.
“It’s a chance to position Tajikistan as a global hub for adventure sports. We want every guest to leave with unforgettable memories and a new appreciation for our natural beauty.”
The Federation and its partners have extended an open invitation to international media, travel bloggers, and aerial sports enthusiasts to witness what they promise will be a spectacular celebration of sport, culture, and Tajik hospitality.
