Syria foils ISIS plot to target churches, New Year celebrations
Government strengthens security measures in Aleppo and other provinces after uncovering planned suicide attacks
ALEPPO, Syria (MNTV) — Syrian security forces announced that they had prevented a ISIS plot aimed at carrying out suicide attacks on New Year celebrations and churches, with a particular focus on Aleppo.
The Interior Ministry said intelligence gathered in coordination with partner agencies revealed that ISIS cells were planning attacks targeting civilian gatherings and religious sites in multiple provinces.
Authorities responded by reinforcing security around churches, deploying mobile and fixed patrols, and setting up checkpoints throughout the city.
During operations at a checkpoint in Aleppo’s Bab Al-Faraj district, a suspected ISIS member opened fire on security forces. One internal security soldier was killed, and the attacker detonated explosives, injuring two others.
The ministry highlighted that the measures were part of ongoing counterterrorism efforts, which have intensified after a recent surge in ISIS attacks across Syria.
Last month, the group was blamed for an assault in Palmyra that killed three Americans, including two U.S. soldiers and one civilian, prompting retaliatory strikes by American forces targeting multiple ISIS sites.
Syrian authorities have continued operations against the group, and on Dec. 25 they announced the killing of a senior ISIS leader in a counterterrorism operation.
Officials emphasized that the combination of intelligence-led interventions and increased security deployments prevented potentially deadly attacks during the holiday period, ensuring the safety of civilians and religious institutions across the affected provinces.
