Summer Solstice Brings Toronto’s First Heat Wave with Temperatures Up to 35°C
Today marks the summer solstice—the longest day of the year—and it brings with it an intense heat wave in Toronto that is expected to last until mid-week.
From Sunday to Wednesday, daytime temperatures are forecasted to reach the mid-thirties, and with humidity levels climbing, it will feel like 45°C. Health officials are warning residents to take precautions, as extreme heat can lead to serious health issues, including heat stroke, dehydration, fainting, and rashes.
Toronto residents are advised to avoid direct sun exposure, stay hydrated, and seek cool spaces whenever possible. In response to the heat wave, the city has activated its Heat Relief Network, which provides over 550 designated cooling spaces across libraries, community centres, and shopping malls. Many splash pads are already open daily, and select outdoor pools have opened earlier for the season.
Additionally, a new pilot program has been launched to provide free portable air conditioners to low-income seniors living in apartments without sufficient cooling.
