Six Bangladeshi peacekeepers killed in drone attack on UN base in southern Sudan
Six Bangladeshi peacekeepers were killed and many injured in what Bangladesh’s interim government described as a “terrorist drone attack”
DHAKA, Bangladesh (AA) — Six Bangladeshi peacekeepers were killed and eight others injured in what Bangladesh’s interim government chief described as a “terrorist drone attack” on a UN base in the disputed Abyei region of southern Sudan on Saturday.
In a statement, interim government head Muhammad Yunus said he was “deeply shocked and saddened” by the attack and confirmed that Bangladesh had urged the United Nations to ensure urgent and advanced medical care for the injured personnel.
“The United Nations has already been requested to take urgent measures to ensure the highest level of medical treatment and necessary assistance to the injured peacekeepers,” Yunus said.
Earlier, the Bangladesh Army said in a Facebook post that the attack occurred at a UN base in Abyei, adding that fighting was ongoing at the time of the statement.
There was no immediate comment from the UN mission.
The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) has been deployed in the oil-rich region since 2011 to monitor security between Sudan and South Sudan, both of which claim the territory and have been locked in long-running disputes.
The UN Security Council renewed UNISFA’s mandate last month.
