Saudi Arabia uncovers ancient rock art sites
Discovery in Soudah Peaks reveals thousands of years of human activity and strengthens heritage-led tourism development plans
ABHA, Saudi Arabia (MNTV) — Saudi Arabia’s Heritage Commission has announced the discovery of 20 ancient rock engraving sites within the Soudah Peaks project area in Aseer Province, highlighting the region’s deep-rooted cultural history.
The findings were made in cooperation with Soudah Development, a company owned by the Public Investment Fund, as part of a comprehensive archaeological survey covering more than 636 square kilometers across Soudah and parts of Rijal Almaa.
Officials said the area now ranks among the most historically significant cultural landscapes in the region, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
According to the Heritage Commission, the newly documented sites contain rock inscriptions and carvings dating back approximately 4,000 to 5,000 years.
The engravings include Thamudic inscriptions and detailed depictions of wildlife such as ibex, hyenas and ostriches, alongside scenes portraying hunters, dancers, palm trees and traditional weapons.
Researchers say the imagery provides important insights into the environmental conditions, daily life and social practices of ancient communities that once inhabited the mountainous area.
The survey was carried out under a memorandum of understanding between the Heritage Commission and Soudah Development and unfolded over four scientific phases.
These included initial data gathering, site analysis, field documentation and the classification of archaeologically significant locations to support future preservation and development planning.
Soudah Development said it remains committed to safeguarding the area’s natural and cultural heritage while integrating archaeological preservation into broader development goals.
The company aims to establish an immersive cultural and tourism destination that reflects the authenticity and historical depth of the region.
The initiative aligns with broader efforts to transform Soudah Peaks into a high-end mountain tourism destination anchored in heritage conservation and sustainable development.
