Russia declares Deutsche Welle ‘undesirable organization’
State news agency Interfax reported that the designation appears in official ministry documents, further tightening restrictions on the German-funded outlet
MOSCOW (MNTV) — Russia has added Germany’s international broadcaster Deutsche Welle to its list of “undesirable organizations,” according to records published by the country’s Justice Ministry.
State news agency Interfax reported that the designation appears in official ministry documents, further tightening restrictions on the German-funded outlet.
Deutsche Welle had already been labeled a “foreign agent” by Russian authorities in March 2022. A month earlier, Russia’s Foreign Ministry ordered the broadcaster to halt operations in the country and revoked the accreditation of its correspondents based in Moscow.
Russian officials have described the measures as retaliation for Germany’s decision to ban the RT DE television channel, part of a broader tit-for-tat between Moscow and Western governments over state-backed media.
Under Russia’s law on “undesirable organizations,” groups placed on the list face an effective ban, while cooperation with them can carry administrative or criminal penalties.
