Russia claims talks with US underway on ‘Putin-Trump Tunnel’ project
Russia has claimed that discussions with the United States have begun on constructing a tunnel to link the two countries by rail
MOSCOW, Russia (MNTV) — Russia has claimed that discussions with the United States have begun on constructing a tunnel under the Bering Strait to link the two countries by rail.
Russian Presidential Envoy for Economic Affairs Kirill Dmitriev announced the development on Friday, saying, “Discussions on the tunnel begin,” in a post on X.
Dmitriev, who also heads the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), described the initiative as a potential milestone for both nations’ economic prosperity.
US President Donald Trump reportedly called the idea “interesting” during his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House on Friday.
Dmitriev suggested the “Putin-Trump Tunnel” could be built in under eight years for less than $8 billion, citing cost-cutting technologies from Elon Musk’s The Boring Company. Traditional estimates for such a project had reached $65 billion.
He added that the tunnel could promote joint resource development, job creation, and economic growth, noting that RDIF has prior experience with cross-border infrastructure, including a railway bridge between Russia and China.
