RCMP Provided Protection to Jagmeet Singh After Alleged Surveillance by Suspected Indian Government Agent
Former Federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh was placed under police protection after the RCMP uncovered what they described as a credible threat to his life 18 months ago, Global News reports.
The National Police force discovered a suspected Indian government agent had access to Singh’s daily routines, travel, and even his family’s whereabouts.
Sources have said the suspect was linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.
The group is infamous for carrying out violence in Canada at the behest of the Indian government.
RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme confirmed last fall that investigators had linked Indian government agents to violent acts in Canada, including the use of criminal networks like the Bishnoi gang.
Police said they had identified over a dozen imminent threats targeting members of the Sikh diaspora, particularly those active in the Khalistan movement.
The RCMP informed Singh of the risk in late 2023, leading to tightened security around his residence and public movements. Singh publicly disclosed the threat in the 2025 federal election campaign.
He has since stepped down after losing his seat.
Singh also said that while the RCMP provided him with security, he was never told about the source of the threat. He said he had to spend months avoiding windows, sheltering with his family. Singh also shared that he had to consider whether he wanted to continue with his public role.
The news comes days before Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to arrive in Canada for the G7 summit in Kananaskis at the invitation of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Canadian Sikh organizations and human rights advocates have strongly criticized the move. They have issued a joint letter accusing the Indian government of operating a “coordinated campaign of transnational repression.”
The Indian High Commission in Ottawa has not commented on the allegations of surveillance.
