Qatar launches Oncology Rehabilitation Framework to support cancer survivors
New initiative by Hamad Medical Corporation aims to improve quality of life, function, and independence for patients living with and beyond cancer
DOHA, Qatar (MNTV) — Qatar has unveiled its first national Oncology Rehabilitation Framework, a landmark initiative designed to improve the long-term well-being of cancer survivors through comprehensive, person-centered care.
The new framework, launched by Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), was developed through collaboration between the Qatar Rehabilitation Institute (QRI) and the National Center for Cancer Care and Research (NCCCR). It addresses the wide-ranging physical, psychological, and social challenges that patients face throughout their cancer journey—from diagnosis through survivorship.
Grounded in international best practices and aligned with WHO rehabilitation guidelines, the framework has been adapted to suit Qatar’s healthcare system and cultural context. Officials say the program marks a significant shift in the nation’s approach to cancer care by emphasizing recovery, independence, and quality of life beyond clinical remission.
“This launch marks a transformative moment for cancer care in Qatar,” said Dr Hanadi Al Hamad, Deputy Chief of Rehabilitation, Geriatrics, Long Term and Home Care Services at HMC. “We are expanding our focus from survival to supporting patients in regaining dignity, function, and independence. Rehabilitation is now an essential part of our national health strategy.”
Dr Mohamed Salem Al Hassan, CEO and Medical Director of NCCCR, underscored the importance of the new model. “Survivorship is now recognized as a critical phase that requires ongoing, multidisciplinary support. This framework ensures every patient receives structured, accessible, and compassionate care.”
The Oncology Rehabilitation Framework aligns with the National Health Strategy 2024–2030 and supports Qatar National Vision 2030 by enhancing healthcare sustainability, improving population health, and empowering local health professionals. Globally, it echoes the WHO Rehabilitation 2030 Call for Action, which promotes equitable access to rehabilitation as a core component of universal health coverage.
With this initiative, Qatar aims to ensure that people affected by cancer are not only surviving but also able to live meaningful lives—physically active, emotionally supported, and socially integrated.
