Pakistani film ‘Nayab’ wins big at SCO Film Festival in China
'Nayab' receives Jury Special Award as Chinese audience connects deeply with story of girl’s fight to join national cricket team
ISLAMABAD/ BEIJING (MNTV) — Pakistani cinema earned a standing ovation at the 2025 Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Film Festival as two Pakistani productions—Nayab and Deemak—won major awards at the event’s closing ceremony in China’s Yongchuan district.
According to The Nation, Nayab, directed by Umair Nasir Ali, was honored with the Jury Special Award, while Deemak, directed by Rafay Akbar Rashdi, received the Best Editing Award. The awards were presented before a packed audience of filmmakers, diplomats, and cinema lovers from across SCO member states.
Director Umair Nasir Ali described the reception of Nayab as deeply moving. “The cinema was packed, and what truly struck me was how engaged the audience was,” he said. “They picked up on emotional nuances, followed Nayab’s journey, and asked thoughtful questions. One filmmaker said he wanted to see more of her final match against India—that’s how invested they were.”
Nayab tells the story of a young girl from Karachi who dreams of playing cricket for Pakistan, pushing back against rigid family expectations and societal norms. The film’s themes of resilience, aspiration, and quiet strength resonated strongly with the Chinese audience, according to attendees.
Actress Soniya Hussain, director Rafay Rashdi, and actor Mohammad Usama joined the Pakistani delegation in receiving the awards. Minister of State for Education Wajiha Qamar and Samina Farzin, Executive Director General of the Directorate of Electronic Media and Publications, also attended the ceremony, highlighting Pakistan’s cultural outreach.
Held from July 3–7, the SCO Film Festival featured screenings, technology expos, panel discussions, and live performances to promote regional exchange. A total of 27 films were submitted from member countries, with entries competing across ten categories including Best Film and Best Director.
