Pakistan crowned inaugural beach handball champions
Pakistan’s unbeaten campaign ends with gold in Maldives, marking breakthrough moment for sport and players at global stage
ISLAMABAD/MALE (MNTV) — Pakistan made history on Monday by winning the inaugural Commonwealth Beach Handball Championship, completing a flawless campaign that has been hailed as a breakthrough for the sport in the country.
The men’s team secured the gold medal in Kulhudhuffushi City, Maldives, with a dominant 2–0 victory over Sri Lanka in the final. Pakistan controlled both sets — 26–18 and 28–12 — showcasing their attacking depth and defensive organization.
The triumph capped an unbeaten run that began with a statement win against archrival India in the opening match. From there, Pakistan swept aside opponents from South Africa, Maldives, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka in the group stage before eliminating Bangladesh again in the semifinal.
Muhammad Shahid Bashir was the star of the final, producing a decisive performance that earned him Player of the Match honors. His display of scoring efficiency and leadership proved pivotal in guiding Pakistan to its first international beach handball title.
The bronze medal went to the host nation Maldives, who defeated Bangladesh to close the tournament on a celebratory note.
Analysts say Pakistan’s success could elevate the sport’s profile at home, where traditional handball already has a following but beach handball remains relatively new.
Winning a Commonwealth crown, they argue, not only cements the team’s regional dominance but also positions Pakistan as a rising force in a discipline gaining traction worldwide.
With the Commonwealth championship now established, observers expect Pakistan’s victory to inspire greater investment in training, grassroots development, and future international participation. For players and fans alike, the moment represents both a historic first and a launching pad for bigger ambitions.
