Nigeria bleeds billions as doctors flee
Over 16,000 Nigerian doctors have emigrated in past seven years, costing heavily and leaving rural communities critically underserved
ABUJA, Nigeria (MNTV) – Nigeria has lost more than 16,000 doctors in the past five to seven years, resulting in billions in losses and a dangerously depleted healthcare system, according to the country’s Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Pate.
The news, first reported by Premium Times, revealed that training a single doctor in Nigeria costs over $21,000.
Poor pay, lack of access to advanced training, and unsupportive research environments are primary drivers of the migration.
In response, the Nigerian government has introduced a National Policy on Health Workforce Migration to ethically manage the outflow of health workers while striving to retain professionals.
Measures include establishing ethical recruitment agreements with destination countries, expanding training capacity, and reintegrating diaspora professionals.
