Muslim children’s group in India leads nationwide campaign to plant 1 million trees
With “Hands in Soil, Heart in Service”, young Muslim students lead climate action across India through mass tree planting
NEW DELHI, India (MNTV) — In a powerful display of environmental stewardship, a Muslim children’s group in India has launched a nationwide tree-planting campaign to combat climate change and promote ecological responsibility among the country’s youth.
The Children’s Islamic Organization (CIO), a student-led initiative rooted in faith and social values, is mobilizing children across India to plant 1 million trees under the campaign titled “Hands in Soil, Hearts with India.” The effort runs from June 26 to July 26, engaging young participants in schools, parks, and neighborhoods in both urban and rural areas.
In the southern city of Coimbatore, around 650 student members—aged between five and twelve—are taking part in the local chapter’s drive to plant at least 3,000 trees. These children, who attend weekly value-based classes, are not only digging holes and watering saplings, but also learning about biodiversity, soil health, and climate resilience through field visits and hands-on workshops.
“The idea is to instill environmental responsibility from a young age. Children can drive meaningful change when given proper direction,” said CIO’s state secretary, M. Saleem.
Beyond tree planting, the campaign includes gifting saplings to government officials, creating awareness in schools, and encouraging families to adopt trees in their communities. CIO has called on schools, parents, and religious leaders to support the initiative and nurture a culture of care for the planet led by children.
The campaign’s message is clear: “Be a part of a generation that turns care into action. Be a Tree Hero. Be a Green Champion”. CIO’s leadership hopes the campaign will grow into a permanent movement of climate consciousness in Indian society.
“If one million children each plant and care for one tree,” CIO stated, “we will have one million new trees securing our country’s future. Plant a tree. Protect the Earth. Be proud.”
In a country where extreme heatwaves, deforestation, and pollution increasingly threaten both health and livelihoods, grassroots climate action led by children—especially from marginalized communities—offers a rare glimpse of hope and resilience.
