Morocco celebrates sweeping victories across major categories at ceremony in Salé
RABAT, Morocco (MNTV) — Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi was named African Men’s Player of the Year, marking his first win of the continent’s top individual football honor after a season highlighted by Paris Saint-Germain’s UEFA Champions League triumph.
The 27-year-old defender added a Ligue 1 title, the French Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup to his tally, though PSG narrowly missed out on the Club World Cup in New York.
Hakimi finished ahead of former winners Mohamed Salah of Egypt and Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen in the final vote.
In his acceptance speech, Hakimi thanked his family, teammates, and Morocco head coach Walid Regragui, noting that the award represents the aspirations of young African footballers.
Despite recovering from a severe ankle sprain, he is expected to lead host nation Morocco at the Africa Cup of Nations beginning December 21.
Morocco also secured a series of major wins on the women’s side, with Ghizlane Chebbak named African Women’s Player of the Year after topping the scoring charts at the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations.
Although Morocco lost to Nigeria in the final, Chebbak outpaced compatriot Sanaa Mssoudy and Nigeria’s Rasheedat Ajibade for the award.
