Mississauga Hospital to Triple in Size with Support from the Muslim Community
Residents in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) can expect significant changes to the healthcare system, as Ontario moves forward with the expansion and reconstruction of a major hospital in Mississauga. The province announced funding of over $14 billion yesterday to build the largest teaching hospital in Canada, which will replace the existing Mississauga Hospital and triple its size to accommodate an estimated 2.2 million residents.
Demonstrating their commitment to social and public causes in Canada, the Muslim Community of Mississauga has pledged $5 million to the project. The new hospital, scheduled to open in 2033, is expected to feature one of the largest emergency departments in the province.
Premier Doug Ford, who attended the announcement event, stated that the expansion will address the healthcare needs of a growing region. “It will be the first hospital of its kind right here in Ontario,” Ford remarked.
Minister of Health Sylvia Jones added, “This is another example of how our government continues to build on our progress by investing in the healthcare needs of Ontario’s growing communities. We are ensuring that more people in Mississauga, the Peel Region, and Etobicoke have access to the highest standard of healthcare for generations to come.”
The new facility is expected to create 2,400 healthcare jobs and bring 400 doctors to Mississauga’s diverse community.
